What is Reef Systems Coral Farm?

Many people who visit Reef Systems Coral Farm for the first time have no idea it even exists, but they all say the same thing: “I’ve never seen a place like this before”. The response is simple, we aren’t like most places because we aren’t a coral shop, we are a farm. The distinction may not be obvious at first, but here is what that means; we grow and raise nearly all of our corals from a few mother colonies. This method is sustainable, reliable, and results in extremely healthy corals.

We have hundreds of different species of corals in our tanks and our jobs are to maintain the health of those corals so they thrive and grow. As they grow we utilize the corals’ natural ability to regenerate itself and we make very specific cuts on the corals, glue them to new substrates, give them time to heal and the product is a genetically identical fragment of coral from the original colony. A very common question we receive is how long does it take for something like that to grow? The answer varies depending on the type of coral and water chemistry of the tank it's in, but broadly speaking, our corals heal and grow fairly quickly. We are speaking about corals here, so the definition of ‘quick’ is used loosely. The point is, we care for and about our coral, in part so we can provide healthy animals to customers to enjoy in their personal tanks at home, but also because we love those animals and want to see them happy and healthy. To ensure their health is maintained from our tanks to yours a large part of our mission is to educate.

Education comes in many forms, for the saltwater hobbyist beginners we do our best to inform them on how we would set up a tank from start to finish and everything in between. That’s an overwhelming amount of information, we get it! For some people they want to hear it all upfront, for others, it’s easier to go step-by-step. Whichever is best for you, we are here to help. Other hobbyists come in with years of experience, their methods may not be how we operate our farm, that’s okay, but we know what we know and it works, so we do our best to explain the educated decisions we make in hope others will follow. We also believe in scientific initiative and discovery and have had wonderful opportunities to partner with various universities in scientific studies. Over the years Reef Systems Coral Farm has cultivated internship opportunities for high school and college students interested in aquaculture science, biology and similar fields. We are grateful for the bright and curious minds that have come to us for hands-on experience and because of the continued interest of these students, we continue to evolve our internship experience to meet the demand. For those who are just looking for a cool field trip to take a group on, we also host those too!

Reef Systems Coral Farm is a small establishment dedicated to growing tank-raised corals. There is a sustainability aspect to what we do, but we also are raising disease free animals to keep your reef tanks safe at home. In doing this, RSCF also tries to help educate every individual that comes through our door. It’s also a bonus that we create beautiful mini-ecosystems that can bring joy to so many people.
